| Introduction Over 350 years ago, villages of Okinawa developed many methods of self defence, to defend against invading warlords. They crafted techniques from everyday farming tools to utilise them as a weapon. This is where the Nunchaku was born, originally used to pound grain, it could be easily carried or disguised from attackers thinking it was a harmless toy. The Nunchaku was and still is constructed of two hard wood handles securely connected by rope or chain. Even today, the Nunchaku because of the innocent appearance and ability to be hidden on ones person, is now used widely by undesirable characters and has been branded as a “thug’s weapon”. The good intentions of its inheritors are now misused. Due to this problem the Nunchaku has been outlawed in many countries and a majority of its application of technique has been lost. Some of the technique categories and basic examples of use are as follows: Blocking / striking Combinations
Blocking and locking techniques
| The main techniques portrayed to the public are striking and bludgeoning techniques. This probably can be compared to the harder Ju jitsu techniques of breaking joints and Atemi. Just like the principle of “Ju”, the Nunchaku also has its softer and harder techniques adapted depending on the level of force needed within a situation. The Nunchaku can develop many skills and can be self-disciplining in practice, just like the ease of executing a throwing technique within Ju jitsu; the Nunchaku becomes an extension of the hands and develops a fluid movement. The combination of these and any of the weapon arts gives the advanced practitioner a new outlook and challenge that can only benefit their martial arts training. One hand Techniques
