Jujitsu?
When someone first hears of Jujitsu, they ask what is it? Most mix up the name thinking it is Judo. Jujitsu is the parent art of Japanese martial arts (See history section).
"Ju" meaning gentle or supple and "Jitsu" meaning art or science. "Ju" is the effect it has on the practitioner and not the art being gentle. Gentle, meaning being able to become so competent within the art that it becomes gentle to one's self when executing the techniques, whether it be a method of striking or a flow of motion when being thrown.
This also refers to the ability to minimise conflict by de-escalating a verbal situation. Being able to walk away from a situation by achieving a result that will be suitable for both parties, or a result that minimises the potential effect to both parties (embarrassment or injury).
Jujitsu is the study of the body and its reactions, in movement, anatomic functions and psychology, by training the practitioner to select the appropriate method or techniques to counter a negative situation.
These negative situations may include countering one person to a group of attackers from:
- Weapon attacks
– chain, chair, knife, axe, garrote, broken bottle, pistol, rifle, baseball bat etc
– standing or ground placement,
- Body assaults – grabbing, pulling / pushing, pinning, bear hugs, full nelson, chokes, smothering, striking (kicking and punching) etc
– standing or ground placement, - Heightened assault situations
– in a lift, on a stairwell, in a car, multiple attackers, when seated in a chair or at a bar etc, and
- A combination of these negative situations.
The practitioner of Jujitsu also learns the justifiable level of force to end an assault, depending on the situation. Recognition of the law is considered as significant as the traditional concept of respecting the art and not abusing the art for self-gratification.
