When comparing the differences in competition and self-defence, it is clear that one method of striking involves an opponent receiving points for delivering strikes to another, and the other method for damaging another for self protection. Competition style striking is delivered to the opponent for the purpose of off-balancing the opponent for a follow-up technique, by the way of striking to a muscular dysfunction area or to knock the wind out of the opponent. Self Defence striking methods are executed to vital point areas for the purpose of creating motor dysfunctions, or to damage the aggressor depending on the force required. The techniques and methods of striking to be delivered in competitions are restricted by rules; strikes are omitted to the groin, joints, throat and head for safety and the well being of the opponent. Availability of techniques may also be reduced and the level of power, depending on the type of contest. Striking techniques within competition are sometimes different, or the choice of technique to be used may be affected by the safety gear that is worn. For this reason self defence striking techniques may also be different to no safety equipment being worn and the application of technique changes for this very reason. For example, a boxer wears gloves to protect their hands and also the opponent’s head and body from injury. In a street situation within the arena of self-defence, a closed bare fist, when delivered to the head will create more damage to the person who executes the punching technique opposed to their aggressor. Techniques will vary in both areas depending on the legal parameters. The techniques executed within competition, such as kicks to the head and multiple strikes would be legally excessive if used in a self-defence situation. Techniques in both areas will vary also due to the limitations of clothing, surfaces and circumstance. For example, a nice kick executed in the training hall with a pair of gi pants, to the mid-section will be nearly impossible in the street. It is recommended that these points are considered and ascertained when learning and using striking techniques in any situation.
